How to download and install the FTP program (do this
once):
-
You must have WinZip or another similar program on your system to proceed.
(If you do not have Winzip, please send
a note to tech support for assistance).
-
Click on the download link for the FTP program.
-
Choose the option to open or run the file from its current location.
-
Use your WinZip program to extract all the files to c:\wsftp (click help
in Winzip for more info).
-
Exit Winzip.
-
Right click your desktop and click New, then Shortcut.
-
For a command line, type:
c:\wsftp\ws_ftp32.exe
-
Click next, then click Finish. You now have an icon for the FTP program
on your desktop.
How to prepare the FTP program to update your website (do this once):
-
Double-click the FTP icon on your desktop.
-
For Profile name, type the name of your website (e.g. WIDGETS INC)
-
For the host name, type:
hosting.dynamis.net
-
For the username, type your username (e.g. widgets.com).
-
For the password, type your password (e.g. secret42n8ly).
-
Click the Save Password option on the right.
-
Beside Local PC, type the path where your website files are stored. If
you used Microsoft Word to create your website, the files are probably
stored at:
C:\My Documents
(for Windows 95 and Windows 98 users)
or
C:\Documents and Settings\logon_name\My Documents
(for Windows 2000 and Windows XP users, where logon_name is the
name you use when logging on to your PC).
If you are not sure where you website files are stored, type this
instead:
C:\
-
Now click the Save button right above where you typed the host name. You
have just created and saved an FTP profile which you will use to quickly
connect to the webserver any time you want to update your website.
How to use the FTP program to update your website (any time):
-
Double-click the FTP icon on your desktop.
-
If the correct profile name is shown (the name of your company or website,
e.g. WIDGETS INC), click OK, otherwise select the correct profile name
and then click OK.
-
If your web files are already listed on the left hand side, skip to step
5.
-
Double-click the folder where your website files are stored on your hard
drive. If they are stored in a folder within a folder, click the parent
folder first, then the folder they are stored in. The procedure for finding
your files is similar to using My Computer or Windows Explorer. If you
do not know where your files are stored on your drive, refer to the help
menu or tech support for your web design software. Or, enter your web design
program, open your website files, and note where they are being stored
when you open them.
Hint: you might find your files by doing this: double-click Documents
and Settings, then double-click your logon name, and then double-click
My Documents.
-
The files on the left are on your computer. The files to the right are
on the server.
-
The main file of your website should be named default.htm. Rename it now
if it is named something different such as index.htm or main.htm.
-
To upload a file to the server, click the file on the left-side list, then
click the arrow pointing to the right (between the left side file list
and the right side file list).
-
To upload a group of files to the server, highlight the group of files
and then click the arrow pointing to the right.
-
When you are down uploading files to the server, click the Exit button
at the bottom right.
